Off-season in the low county is something special. While needing a wrap for cooler temperatures in the evening and daytime when close to the water, the benefit of no mosquitos, empty restaurants and barely any visitors makes the pay off worth the trip.
Our Jaunt was in February, the perfect time to relax and recharge. A carriage ride through the historic streets, allowed us to witness the bright, beautiful and large historic homes. Far better than attempting a walk through the city - as we took a ghost tour the night before - we were able to traverse more land, and take in the second most haunted city in the country [New Orleans, LA being the first].
Where the night waking tour tales were focused on pirate stories, the day horse-carriage ride, completely avoided the impact of the slave trade in Charleston. The Gullah women were out weaving baskets, and while their history was briefly spoken to, there are other tours that allow more in depth historical context and enlightenment around the Gullah culture and how they shaped the current life that is known as the vibrant culture of the South, the "Original Bermuda" model.
Staying within walking distance of the Charleston open air market, Aquarium, African-American Museum, and a grocery store, made our stay the perfect blend of culture and practicality, making the vacation the perfect getaway. You know... one of those in which you don't need a vacation to get over the vacation.
We feasted on local seafood - our favorite, then walked it off as we went from shop to shop closely examining the local crafts. Some made their way home with us, and others left to be collected the next time we visit (we've already made plans for the summer). This time, I will be ready for the humidity (I hope)!
Until the next time, Charleston, you have captivated my imagination.
XO,
Miss Jaunt
